FAQ
01. What is the difference between GM and GS MIDI files?
GS is a Roland extension of the GM (General MIDI) set of 128 sounds. Files created using GS sounds are of a much higher sound quality than those created for basic GM playback. As such, if your soundcard or sound module only has the GM sound set it's likely you won't appreciate the MIDI files as much as you would if you heard them play back through a GS soundcard or module. The simplest way to get into GS MIDI files is to install Roland's Virtual Sound Canvas. CLICK HERE for more info.
02. Can you recommend a free MIDI jukebox?
MIDI Jukeboxes for PCs have been around literally for years and the choices are plentiful. In fact, Windows Media Player will play MIDI files but there is a better alternative, particularly if you're at all musically inclined and would like something that gives you more control over the playback of MIDI files. The Van Basco Karaoke Player (download free here) is simple and easy to use but best of all, it has a keyboard display so you can see what's being played.
